Cost Of Living

A major advantage for international students who choose to study in Malaysia is the relatively reasonable cost of living. The total expenditure for accommodation, either on-campus or off-campus, is very affordable.

While your actual cost of living will depend on the location of your accommodation and your personal lifestyle, students will be pleased to know that Kuala Lumpur has been ranked the most affordable city for students. For most students, a monthly budget of RM1,500 (US$469) will provide them with a rather comfortable living in Malaysia.

So what are the things you should include while planning your monthly expenditure?

Accommodation

You should estimate about RM300-600 (US$94-188) for your accommodation per month. The rental will vary depending on the geographical area, the type of accommodation, the facilities provided in the house and of course, the number of people sharing the room (or apartment or house).

Food and Housekeeping

Your food and housekeeping expenses are estimated to be around RM450-600 (approx. US$140-185). This is based on about RM15-20 (US$4.60-6.20) for three meals per day. Naturally, it would be cheaper if you cook and share the cooking expenses with your friends.

Public Transport

Students who stay on campus or near campus may not incur any cost of travelling to and fro from classes. However, other travelling may costs approximately RM30-50 (US$9-16) per month.

Medical and Hospitalisation Insurance

Although you may not need to pay for medical expenses every month, if you put aside RM50 (US$16) per month, it would be sufficient for you in case you need outpatient treatment at a private clinic during the year. This estimate does not include the amount you will have to pay for your medical and hospitalisation insurance of about RM500 per year.

Work Opportunities

Malaysia, which hosts a large number of foreign professionals and undergraduates, has a diverse and vibrant workforce.

If you are an international student you are allowed to pursue part-time employment in Malaysia. Students can work for 20 hours with a student visa.

Money

It is better to prepare each amount of money that you need in dollars or euros for early weeks or months and have 300 to 500 ringgit with yourself for the first hours of arrival at the airport or hotel.

The necessary points while preparing equipment needed for the first travel to Malaysia:
1. Baggage allowance for any traveler is approximately 30 kg, and you can carry a handbag up to 7 kg with yourself inside the plane; if your baggage is more than the allowed baggage, you will have to pay the overload; so, it is better to prepare the unnecessary appliances in Malaysia due to high rates of the overload. Of course, it is better to ask about the weight of baggage allowance from the airline that you prepared tickets.

2. Things such as lighters, nail clippers, knives, water and watery foods are prohibited.

3. Do not put your documents and monies in the main luggage which located in load part and accompany yourself inside the plane.

4. Malaysia is almost hot and humid in all seasons of the year; it is better bring yourself cotton clothes and carry an autumn dress for cases or travel to cooler places.

5. Price of men’s shoes is expensive in Malaysia; purchase shoes from your country of residence and bring yourself if you use 100% of it.
